Australia has a new queen of Alt-Rock, in the form of singer and songwriter Emma Rowe, with the release of her recent, debut 3-track E.P “Lioness,” which from the get-go throws you back to Canada’s Bif Naked and the “I Bificus” era, specifically songs like Naked’s “Chotee,” because of Rowe’s similar vocal phrasing and overall Punk-influenced sound. You can even hear a Gaelic-sounding yodel from the new, fresh Indie singer on the E.P’s title-track that sends an ultimate shiver down your spine, reminiscent of the late Dolores O’Riordan from The Cranberries. It is everything that you would want in order to feel excited about music…it is dramatic and it is daring, with a similar sound to 2000’s JJ72 as well as a memorable, minor chord structure.

“Bleach Song” is the best showcase of Emma Rowe’s masterfully performed singing, with controlled vibrato in unexpected places, adding to her the overall temperamental, excitement of her sound. If Green Day ever decided to go in a more Alt Rock direction it would probably sound a little something like this and Rough Online are extremely impressed with her band’s musicianship skills, which includes slick rhythm guitar parts and a skilfully played lead in Bleach Song’s Middle 8 instrumental section. And “Devil” takes Emma Rowe’s “Lioness” E.P into Paramore territory, with drums that rhythmically throw us back to Courtney Love’s famous bridge on Hole’s 1998 single “Celebrity Skin,” and a chord progression similar to the eccentric Marina And The Diamond’s 2009 track “Mowgli’s Road.” It is the E.P’s standout Grunge song, that takes Rowe’s sound in a more sinister direction and Rough Online absolutely love this contrast.

The concept of “radio-friendly” is of no interest to Emma Rowe, as she is blatantly keeping things real with her authentic cross between Indie Rock and Acoustic Punk, and Rough Online love her boldness and “fuck-off” attitude. She is doing things her way and it has been masterfully delivered via one of the best Rock E.P’s we have heard all year. If you’re a fan of throwback, angst-ridden, female fronted Rock bands like Veruca Salt, then we highly recommend you listen to the “Lioness” E.P out now on Spotify.
