Model | Interview

Sizzling hot Nigerian born model Vincent Afolabi emerged on the fashion scene especially in Africa after being nominated as the 2019 Top Model at annually organised male model competition 'THE MODEL LOOK AFRICA' in Lagos, Nigeria. Following his 2019 Top Model designation, the Lagos-based model who portrays himself as a formidable and ambitious young man has appeared on the catwalks of some of Africa's best know brands and walked the runways of various shows across the African continent. Afolabi is far from being a pretty face but also a modern generation model that possess a back up of multiple skills including acting, writer and a poet. With that said, a few questions were dished out to the up and coming model to acknowledge.

ROUGH
present 'The Vincent Afolabi Conversation'
ROUGH:  How best would you describe yourself?

VINCENT AFOLABI:
I am ambitious and driven. I thrive on challenges and I constantly set goals for myself, so I have something to strive toward. I'm not comfortable with settling, and I'm always looking for an opportunity to do better and achieve greatness.

ROUGH:  What makes you tick as individual?

V.A:
coming up with creative ideas to improve something, or make something new.
ROUGH:  You won the 2019 THE MODEL LOOK AFRICA which must have been a great accomplishment for you. Can you describe the experience in itself to have won?

V.A:
The experiences I’ve had so far after I’ve won has been amazing so far. I’ve learnt how to be better at Modelling which is one of the thing that drives me and so many other things. The management team has helped me improved in so many areas.
ROUGH:  What made you enter the competition and how did you prepare for it?

V.A:
I was looking for a platform that can showcase my talent and push me beyond my limits, then I came across the page and I said to myself “this is it”.

ROUGH:  More opportunities have presented itself for you no doubt after winning such an exciting competition. Can you share some of it with us?

V.A:
I’ve had the opportunity to work with so many designers in Nigeria here and I also got a movie role for African Magic. I've been given the opportunity to go for different interviews to inspire models like me out there looking out for platforms like this.
ROUGH:  Good health in terms mind, body and soul is a very essential aspect of being a model. Do you care to share some of the things you do to make sure you stay fit, healthy and have a sound mind?

V.A:   I meditate most times and work out. The mind is a very strong and important of the body.
ROUGH:  What inspires you to get going?

V.A:  People basically do that. I have a lot of people around me that makes me feel I can make it in anything I do.

ROUGH:  Song or music you can stop listening to and why?

V.A:
I don’t have a song or music for now I’d want to stop listening to.
ROUGH:  Best book you’ve ever read? Was it live changing after reading it?

V.A:  Think Big: Unleashing Your Potential for Excellence, Book by Ben Carson. It was live changing.

ROUGH:  What is the best advice you’ve ever been given that has stack with you?:

V.A:
Best advice will be; never limit your challenge, always challenge your limit.
ROUGH:  Fashion stands for so many different things for so many diverse people. What would you say fashion means to you?

V.A:   Fashion to me is the first thing people look at to interpret who i am. It shows what choices i make, what type of person I am, and shows the world what i stand for. It gives a glimpse into someone's personality. It's how I stand out from other people.
ROUGH:  If you had to change two things in modelling industry what would it be and why?

V.A:  If I could change one thing it would be for those who work behind-the-scenes, the managers and so on, to have a little more praise and credit for their work. And, Nigerian Models should not be underrated- so many Clients have delayed or refused payments, leaving agencies and management teams to foot the bill. In short, the ambiguity of prompt payment seems in direct contrast to fashion being a capitalist industry that benefits off of materialism.

ROUGH:   Lastly what do you hope to achieve or let just say where do you see yourself in next 10 years?

V.A:
I see myself as a supermodel overseas unleashing my true and 100% potential and paving way for young and upcoming models watching me.
