#HonestatHome

We love a good burger here at Rough...but we also miss biting into a fresh, meaty, messy bun. Many of our favourite burger restaurants may have been closed due to lockdown, but we rejoiced upon discovering that many have got hip to offering at-home burger DIY kits – and one of our favourites to do so is Honest Burger.

We gave their Tribute Burger DIY kit a try. The kit comes in a cool green ‘Honest’ emblazoned tote bag, stuffed with all the goodies required to assemble two burgers - chopped British chuck steak and rib cap patties from the Honest Butchery, British cheddar slices, dry cured smoked bacon rashers, a whole red onion, French’s mustard and burger buns from The Bread Factory (gluten-free also available.) There are also little pots of Honest Kitchen burger relish, sweet seasoned pickles and Honest’s signature rosemary salt.

The ingredients in the DIY kit are exactly the same as any Honest kitchen, butchery and Honest restaurants which gives that authentic burger experience right in your kitchen – the only thing missing is their chef! The kit does come with step-by-step directions and an illustration, but if you’re like us and love a good demonstration video, there’s a QR code to scan which pops up with a video of co-founder Tom who shares his top burger perfecting tips while cooking this exact same burger.

The preparation is fuss-free, just how we like it. Equipment wise, all that’s required is a heavy based frying pan, spatula and grill/oven.

With the directions at hand and working from the demonstration video, we were ready and amped to recreate our Honest burger. First up, we added the burger patties in the pan – no added oil is required due to the fattiness of the patties. These patties are the real deal, the beef derives from native cows from Gloucestershire where chuck steak and rib cap is used before mincing themselves.

Whilst grilling the bacon rasher for several minutes, we pressed down on our patties to give them a good sear for 5 mins on each side until it was medium-well done – that’s how we like our burgers, though times vary on how well done you’d like yours done. Once liberally seasoned with the rosemary salt, we added the slices of cheese and bacon onto each patty, popped the bun on top, covered with a lid and cooked for 60 secs. Once the base of the bun had toasted, we smeared burger relish, added the pickles, caramelised red onion, French’s mustard before adding the meaty patty, gooey cheese and crisp bacon. There’s an option to add your own lettuce, which does not come with the kit, but we opted for tomatoes instead. And there we had it, our wonderful burger creation *chef’s kiss* our kitchen was filled with the aromas of a burger restaurant and the burger itself was sublime…if we say so ourselves!

This kit offers an authentic at-home burger experience and a good, fun way to get together with your friends or family members to create your own unique and ultimate Honest burger. From only £15 kit (based on 2x Burgers), it’s a steal!
